Water/Literacy Project

![]() (click photo to enlarge) We just received a report from our partner club in Joao Pessoa, Brazil. All of the cisterns were completed in June, 2008. The computer center has been up and running for some time. Seventy students have completed a 100 day introductory course in computer science. (Graduation photo is above) Another 70 are currently studying. Two hundred more are registered and waiting. |

RI Approves Brazilian Water/Literacy ProjectWe just received notice from RI that our club's Matching Grant Request for a water project in Brazil has been approved. The project includes building 35 cisterns and providing computers to the village school. Click here for more project information, and here to see the RI award letter. In addition to University Sunrise, the USA side of the project is funded with donations from John Goddard (our John's father), Richard Rotter, the Mill Creek Rotary Club, and the Magnolia Rotary Club. | The municipality of Gurjão is located in the State of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil. It is one of the poorest áreas of the country and is affected by serious drought periods, which cause enormous problems to the needy population of region. The aim of this project is to build 35 cisterns to collect rain water from the roofs of the houses selected in the area, and also provide the municipality's school with seven computers for the students to have access to the internet and help them in their studies. This action can alleviate the population's necessity of water, providing drinking and cooking water and give better opportunities for the students to learn. The project combines water and literacy Rotary International and district objectives. |

* Our project was specifically mentioned in a world wide report to the RI president regarding water projects around the world. * We were asked to make a presentation about our water project to the Western Regional International Health Conference held at the University of Washington. Lee made the presentation on the 18th of February.
